The Ventilation Problem
Kentucky's humidity makes bathroom ventilation critical. We see mold issues regularly in homes where exhaust fans are undersized, broken, or missing entirely.
Signs of Poor Ventilation
- Foggy mirrors that don't clear quickly
- Paint peeling or bubbling
- Musty odors that linger
- Visible mold on grout or caulk
- Water stains on ceiling
- Soft drywall near shower
Exhaust Fan Sizing
CFM Requirements
- CFM = Cubic Feet per Minute of air moved
- Minimum: 1 CFM per sq ft of bathroom
- Better: 1 CFM per sq ft + 50 CFM for each toilet, tub, and shower
Bright vanity-focused bathroom design
Quality craftsmanship and attention to detail make the difference in every remodeling project. We bring years of experience to Central Kentucky homes and businesses.
Example Calculation
- 8' x 10' bathroom = 80 sq ft
- Has tub/shower combo = +50 CFM
- Has toilet = +50 CFM
- Recommended: 180 CFM fan
Fan Selection
Standard Fans
- Basic functionality
- Often noisy (3+ sones)
- Budget-friendly ($30-80)
Quiet Fans
- Under 1 sone (barely audible)
- More likely to be used properly
- Mid-range ($80-200)
Premium Fans
- Humidity sensors (auto on/off)
- LED lighting built in
- Heater options
- Higher CFM in compact size
- Investment ($200-400+)
Installation Tips
Duct Routing
- Duct must vent outside, not to attic
- Insulated duct prevents condensation
- Smooth duct flows better than flex
- Shorter runs perform better
Placement
- Centered over shower/tub area
- Away from supply vents
- Accessible for maintenance
Usage Best Practices
For mold prevention:
- Run fan during showers
- Keep running 20-30 minutes after
- Use humidity-sensing fans for automation
- Clean fan cover quarterly
- Check duct connection annually
When to Upgrade
Consider a new fan if:
- Current fan is 10+ years old
- It's noticeably noisy
- Humidity lingers after use
- You see mold returning after cleaning
