Not Every Door Replacement Needs a New Frame
Interior door replacement can be simpler or more involved depending on the condition of the existing jamb, hinges, and opening. Sometimes a slab replacement is enough. Other times a prehung unit is the cleaner and more reliable solution.
The right choice depends on what is wrong with the existing opening.
When a Slab Replacement Works
Detail-focused finish work and fixture installs
Quality craftsmanship and attention to detail make the difference in every remodeling project. We bring years of experience to Central Kentucky homes and businesses.
A slab-only swap usually makes sense when:
- The existing frame is straight and in good condition
- Hinge locations can be matched accurately
- The latch and strike alignment are still good
- You want a style upgrade without reframing the opening
This can be an efficient option when the surrounding trim and wall finish are staying in place.
When Prehung Is the Better Answer
A prehung unit is often the safer choice when:
- The old frame is damaged or out of square
- The door has never closed correctly
- Trim is already being replaced
- You want a cleaner reset of the whole opening
Prehung installation can solve long-running fit problems that a slab swap cannot.
Finish Details Matter Here Too
Door replacement often includes more than hanging the panel. Casing fit, reveal lines, hardware placement, caulk, and touch-up paint all affect whether the finished result feels intentional.
Choose the Path That Matches the Opening
If the opening is sound, a slab swap may be the simpler move. If the frame is part of the problem, replacing the full unit is usually worth it.
